Bicyclists Mix Pleasure and Philanthropy on Urbandale Trails

Nearly 80 riders took part in the Second Annual Urbandale Mayor's Charity Ride on Saturday afternoon.

Two years ago Urbandale Mayor and avid cyclist Bob Andeweg suggested that rather than have an event and walk the cities extensive trail system it might be a good idea to give people an opportunity to see more by biking.

That's all it took to excite Mary Paulson, program coordinator of the Urbandale Community Action Network (U-CAN).  Paulson saw a way to raise much needed funds for the many programs sponsored by the non-profit organization.

"Last year we raised $900 and the money went toward support of youth school programs, family friendly events in our parks and a healthy lifestyle program which encourages participants to eat well and get regular exercise,” she said.

This year U-CAN partnered with the NW Des Moines Rotary Club in an effort to maximize outreach, volunteers and raise some money for their efforts.

Club president Bradford Helgemo rattled off a list of funding projects they support including the the Des Moines Bike Collective and the Urbandale Food Pantry.

At Saturday’s event, he and other Rotary members, handled registration and flipped burgers for a meal which preceded the ride.

"We're committed to helping our neighbors and our communities.,” he said. “This is a great way to show our support for vital programs across the metro."
