Steve Gaer, whose city has seen robust growth during a crippling recession, is considering a U.S. Senate bid, but says uniting Republicans in a primary would be a hurdle.
The mayor of one of Iowa’s most successful cities says he’ll decide early next week whether to seek the Republican nomination for U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin’s seat. Harkin, a popular Democrat, announced earlier this year he will not seek a sixth term. It’s a rare, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, said West Des Moines Mayor Steve Gaer, who was approached about six weeks ago by the National Republican Senatorial Committee, which works to recruit and elect Republicans to the U.S. Senate, about seeking the nomination. A Johnston woman, who claims a staff member from the Bachmann presidential campaign stole an email list of homeschoolers, is reportedly in negotiations to settle her lawsuit.
Former GOP presidential hopeful Michele Bachmann is negotiating a settlement with a former campaign worker from Johnston who sued the Minnesota congresswoman over a stolen email list, according to the Star Tribune's report on Wednesday. Barb Heki served as a coordinator of home-school supporters for U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann’s presidential campaign that participated in the January 2012 Iowa caucuses. She claimed fellow staffer and Iowa State Sen. Kent Sorenson stole an email list from her computer in Bachmann’s Urbandale campaign office in 2011. A new report by the U.S. Census Bureau shows that 69.4 percent of eligible Iowans voted in the 2012 election, in which Barack Obama earned a second term in the White House. U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann’s former chief of staff plans to testify before the Iowa Senate Ethics Committee in a case alleging that Iowa Sen. Kent Sorenson, the Iowa chairman of the Minnesota congresswoman’s failed presidential campaign, received improper payments. Andy Parrish is the confidential informant in the allegations against Sorenson, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reported. Until now, he has only been identified as “Witness A.” He is expected to corroborate allegations made by Peter Waldron, a Florida pastor, who also worked for the Bachmann campaign. Iowa Democrats have a head start, at least for now, in the race to replace Tom Harkin in the U.S. Senate in 2014. Bruce Braley, the first district congressman from Waterloo who declared his candidacy in January, is amassing a roster of supporters and money and appears to have no competition for the nomination.
