Motorcyclist Killed in Crash Identified as Urbandale Man

Charges of failure to yield the right of way charges are pending against the driver of an SUV that allegedly struck the motorcycle Nicholas Otto was riding.

An Urbandale man died in a Wednesday morning crash on Hickman Road in Des Moines, authorities said.

Nicholas Otto, 57, died after an SUV turned in front of his motorcycle at Hickman Road and Ninth Street, the Des Moines Register reported.

The crash occurred around 6 a.m. Otto was eastbound on Hickamn when his vehicle was struck when Katerin Bloch, 51, of Polk City, who was westbound, turned south onto Ninth Street, the Register said, citing the Des Moines Police Department.

Failure to yield the right of way charges are pending, according to the report. It is not believed that alcohol or excessive speed were factor.

Otto was pronounced dead at the scene.
