Could Some Urbandale Elementary Schools Be Closing in the Future?

According to a long-term district facilities plan, it could be a possibility.

Could Urbandale school district end up with fewer schools in the future?

A district long-term facilities plan could make that a truth.

According to the Des Moines Register, the closing of at least one school was included in the language of plans presented to the Urbandale school board at a meeting last week.

The plans include several options for addressing facilty needs at the elementary level, the article said, including:

  • Renovating all six of the district’s current elementary schools and keeping them open with the current grade levels
  • Renovating all of the buildings except Webster Elementary, but keeping only five schools open
  • Renovating all of the buildings except Webster, but keeping only four schools open, among other ideas.

Determining how many elementary schools the district would like will be a significant next step for Urbandale leaders, Vincent Ward of DLR Group told the Register. Deciding how to deliver preschool and kindergarten education, whether in each building or in separate centers, will also be fundamental.

The next step will be to survey parents and community members, the article said.
