Army Soldiers to Salute Urbandale’s Lazard and his Coach
By becoming a U.S. Army All-American, wide receiver Allen Lazard joins an elite fraternity.

The U.S. Army will march into Urbandale on Friday to officially select Urbandale High School standout Allen Lazard for the 2014 U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio on Jan. 4
A special ceremony will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Urbandale High School football stadium, located at 7111 Aurora Ave. Lazard will receive his honorary All-American Bowl jersey from local soldiers in front his friends, family, teammates and classmates. Not only will the event honor Lazard, but the U.S. Army also will recognize Coach Sam Anderson, acknowledging the leadership and teamwork used to develop each All-American athlete.

By becoming a U.S. Army All-American, Lazard joins an elite fraternity. Only 90 high school football players out of millions in the nation are selected to participate each year. Athletes are chosen not just because they excel on the football field, but because they possess the strengths similar to our Army Strong Soldiers of mental, emotional and physical toughness. Lazard also will join the ranks of talented alumni comprised of NFL stars and Heisman Trophy winners, including Andrew Luck, Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow.
Mark Davis, deputy assistant secretary of the Army for marketing, called Lazard “a talented athlete whose leadership and teamwork qualities have made him a standout at Urbandale High School,.

“Only the strongest wear the Army colors, and are proud to welcome all of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl players and commend each of them on their selection,” he said.
As part of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, each player selected to play in the game is honored at a Selection Tour event in his hometown. The tour crosses the country through late fall and by its end will have selected 90 players, in addition to 125 band and color guard members who will participate in the game on Jan. 4, 2014, in San Antonio, Texas. Annually, the All-American Bowl is the Army’s largest public outreach effort, allowing the Army to share its story with tens of millions of people.Get more local news delivered straight to your inbox.
