Urbandale Umpire Calls the Shots in All-Star Futures Game

Twenty-six-year-old Pat Hoberg was invited to umpire the MLB game played at Citi Field in New York City.

A 26-year-old umpire from Urbandale took his craft to a larger field over the weekend.

On Sunday, Pat Hoberg was crouched at home plate at City Field in New York City, umpiring the MLB All-Star Futures Game, according to the Des Moines Register.

Hoberg was introduced to umpiring at an early age, the article said, doing it as a job through college.  He attended the Jim Evans Academy of Professional Umpiring in 2009 before starting a career in professional baseball later that year.

After being sent to the Arizona League, Hoberg was promoted to triple-A and assigned to the Pacific Coast League, the Register reported.

Getting the call to go to Citi Field was "one of the best he ever received", Hoberg told the newspaper. He went on to call the experience surreal.
