Urbandale Group to Throw Mardi Gras Gala

Proceeds from the event , sponsored by the Urbandale Community Action Network will benefit human services, stronger neighborhoods and community activities in Urbandale.

“I really don’t know if Urbandale had seen an event like what we have planned in quite some time,” said Betty Devine, UCAN Events Committee chair.   The Urbandale Community Action Network (UCAN) is hosting the First Annual Mardi Gras Gala on Saturday, February 18, 2012 at the , 4800 Merle Hay Road in Urbandale.  The event begins at 7:00 p.m.

“This will be UCAN’s signature event so we want it to be something really special," said Devine.   The black-tie optional event will feature New Orleans themed food, a Dixieland Jazz Band and the opportunity to purchase “King Cakes*” to win fabulous prizes.  Prizes include hotel packages, diamond jewelry, golf and spa packages.  Beautiful Mardi Gras masks are also available for purchase.

“The Mardi Gras Gala will offer a wonderful evening of fun during the doldrums of winter here in Iowa, “says Devine.  “Most importantly, this event will help raise funds to support human service needs, stronger neighborhoods and community activities in Urbandale.”

Tickets are $50 per individual and Mardi Gras Masks are $10 each. Both are available for purchase at www.urbandalenetwork.org, or by calling the UCAN office at 278-3936. 

The Urbandale Community Action Network (UCAN) is a not-for-profit 501(c) (3) organization serving as a catalyst for positive community action and spirit in Urbandale.  UCAN is focusing on ways to impact the community today and define what Urbandale should look like in the year 2017, the city’s 100th birthday.

*A king cake is a type of cake associated with the festival of Epiphany in the Christmas season in a number of countries, and in other places with the pre-Lenten celebrations of Mardi Gras / Carnival. The cake has a small trinket (often a small plastic baby, said to represent Baby Jesus) inside, and the person who gets the piece of cake with the trinket has various privileges and obligations.
