Nothing Says 'Thank You' Like a Chocolate Chip Cookie

Horizon Elementary students sent thank-you banners, cookies and cards to members of the Johnston Police Department this week.

From the Johnston Schools Students at Horizon Elementary celebrated National Police Officer Day and National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day on Wednesday, May 15, according to Laura Dillavou of the Johnston school district communications office. "We appreciate the support our schools receive from the Johnston Police Department," Dillavou said in a release. Horizon students sent thank-you banners, cookies, and cards to officers of the Johnston department.

Urbandale High School Students Honored by Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards

An inaugural showcase and awards ceremony will be held June 3. The Urbandale production of "Once Upon a Mattress" is an award winner.

From a News Release: Urbandale High School theater students are among those being honored by Des Moines Performing Arts in the first Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards, according to a news release. Urbandale award winners are: Production Awards Student Award for Outstanding Achievement Special Recognition An awards showcase honoring the young thespians for their outstanding achievements in musical theater will be held at the Des Moines Civic Center on Monday, June 3, at 7 p.m., the release said. KKK Application Taped to Black Middle School Student's Locker

A 14-year-old Urbandale Middle School student says there was nothing funny about the prank, and his mother believes the school district is downplaying the incident.

An black Urbandale middle school student says he is upset and scared after another student taped a Ku Klux Klan application to his locker on Wednesday, according to news reports. "It kind of upset me because there's a lot of history behind that and there's nothing funny about it," 14-year-old Donte Johnson told WHO. The Des Moines Register reports that parents are upset. He told the Register many parents of black students have contacted him to express their dismay that such a blatant act of racism occurred. “I’ve not seen anything that’s initiated this much conversation,” Stillwell told the Register. Class of 2013: When is Urbandale High School's Commencement?

Everything you need to know to attend next week's ceremony for Urbandale High School graduates.

Another school year has come and gone, and the time is here to wish a new class of graduates good luck as their high school years come to an end. Urbandale High School will hold its commencement ceremony on Thursday, May 23. Here's what you need to know: When: May 23, 7-10 p.m. Where: Drake University's Knapp Center, 2601 Forest Ave., Des Moines. Parking: Ample free parking is available around campus, but you might want to arrive early if you want to avoid walking long distances. Also, for those of you with graduates this year, rehearsal for graduation will be Tuesday, May 21 at 9:30 a.m. in the high school's south gymnasium. Waukee Superintendent Given Performance Evaluation in Open Session

Even though state law could have provided for a closed session, Waukee school district superintendent Dave Wilkerson requested it be done in front of the public.

Waukee school district Superintendent Dave Wilkerson received good marks from the school board Monday during his annual performance review, the Des Moines Register reports. Wilkerson asked that the evaluation be done in open session, although state law says he could have requested it be conducted in closed session, the article said. It also stated Wilkerson said part of why he requested to receive the board’s critique during open session was to let kids in attendance from a local Boy Scouts of America troop see how public officials were held accountable. The Register also reported that board members praised Wilkerson during the meeting and gave input as to what his goals should be for next year. Wilkerson has been superintendent since 2004…

Sold: Waukee Class Markets Weekend Tour of Homes for Sale

A Waukee High School advertising class wanted to promote homes for sale within the school district. That idea has mushroomed into a weekend tour of homes with the Waukee office of Iowa Realty.

While the housing market is starting to come out of the doldrums, a Waukee High School advertising class is working to boost local sales. Students in Chris Guess' advertising class have coordinated a weekend tour of homes for 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 20, working with Donna Stall of the Waukee Iowa Realty office. Guess had done a similar project with a real estate office when he taught in Glenwood and said it was well received. He wanted to do houses for re-sale, and the prices range from an affordable $135,000 to about $549,000. "We always try to give our kids a real-life experience for their final project," he said.
