Polling sites will be open two dates in June before the June 25 special election. Voters will decide whether to issue $41 million in bonds to construct a new high school and renovate other buildings.
From the Johnston Schools website: Voters in the Johnston school district have options for voting in the $41 million bond referendum special election beyond going to the polls on June 25. As of May 6, two early voting stations were authorized by the Polk County Auditor’s Office. Voters can now vote at either of these locations: Early voting offers busy parents and patrons the opportunity to cast an official ballot at a time and location that may be more convenient than traditional precinct locations and the June 25 election date, the district said. Voters can also fill out and mail in an absentee ballot request to receive their ballot in the mail. It is then filled out and sent to the Polk County Auditor’s Office no later than 5 p.m. on …

Both the Waukee High School girls' and boys' shuttle hurdle relays won last week at the Drake Relays.
From the Waukee Schools website: Congratulations to the Waukee girls' and boys' shuttle hurdle relay teams for both winning Drake Relays championships on April 27. The girls' team of Emma Drees, Mallory Smith, Emily Kamm, and Maddi Rouw won their second consecutive Drake title and broke their own Drake Relays record. The two time defending state champions also broke their own all time Iowa record with a time of 1:02.84. The boys' team of Noah Larrison, Josh Brdicko, Riley Gray, and Jared Brdicko won their first Drake title, edging Cedar Rapids Kennedy by .01 seconds. The Central Iowa Conference track meet scheduled for today has been moved to Monday due to the expected winter weather conditions.
The Central Iowa Conference has called off a multi-school track meet that was supposed to be held at Waukee High School at 3:30 today due to expected wintry weather conditions. The forecast calls for a high of 35 degrees today and 3 to 5 inches of snow. The meet featured boys and girls varsity squads from 11 conference schools from across the Des Moines metro and beyond. The schools are Ames, Ankeny, Dowling Catholic, Fort Dodge, Johnston, Marshalltown, Mason City, Southeast Polk, Urbandale and West Des Moines Valley. The arena normally shuts down for a month in the summer, but repairs can’t be delayed any longer, the manager said.
Hockey players and figure skaters will have to find another place to play and practice for two months this summer as the Metro Ice Sports Facility in Urbandale undergoes repairs. The floor’s refrigeration system needs to be repaired, manager Scott Branoven told the Des Moines Register. Though the repairs aren’t costly, shutting down the facility for two months – from June 15 to Aug. 15 – will require some “creative planning” for the Des Moines Youth Hockey Association and the Des Moines Figure Skating Club, which is looking to move practices to Ames temporarily. “At first, we were concerned, but the board is pretty excited about the renovations,” Debbie Noe, a past president of the Des Moines Figure Skating Club, told the newspaper. “We’…

Jordyn Kleve, Jared Seay and Kenzie Foldes were among the Johnston High School athletes with top 10 or better finishes.
From the Johnston Athletics website: On Thursday, the Johnston High School Dragons boys' and girls' varsity track teams got off to a great start at the Drake Relays. Jordyn Kleve set a personal record and placed 6th in the women's 3000-meter run with a time of 10:10.77. She also set a new school record, besting Obsie Birru’s time set in 2008. Kenzie Foldes also set a personal record with a time of 10:25.37 in the 3000-meter run, good enough for a 10th-place finish. In the high school boys' division, sophomore Jared Seay placed second overall in the high jump with a mark of 6-07.00. There'll be plenty of good fishing this spring and summer.
Getting those fishing poles and tackle boxes ready. The Central Iowa Catfish Anglers are getting ready to kick off their 2013 tournament. The tournament kicks off this Sunday, April 28, at the Coralville Reservoir, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Mahaffey Bridge ramp. It concludes at Saylorville Lake in September for the second annual state tournament. One to three-man teams are allowed. There is a $70 entry fee. Tournament organizers ask participants to show up one hour prior to start time to register.
