Urbandale Looks at Starting School After State Fair, but Before Sept. 1

Only two Iowa school districts complied with state law last year.

Iowa law requires that schools start during the week of Sept. 1

It doesn’t happen that way often, though, and Urbandale is among the hundreds of Iowa school districts that seek and receive waivers.

The school district has scheduled a May 6 public hearing to discuss the proposed 2013-2014 start date for Urbandale schools, the Des Moines Register reports. The school district wants to start two weeks earlier.

Superintendent Doug Stilwell said the district wants to work around the Iowa State Fair, which runs Aug. 8-18. That means Aug. 19 would be the earliest school would start next fall.

“A lot of our students work at the fair and we want to keep being good partners with them,” Stilwell said.

The earlier start date is being considered to allow students to take finals before winter break.
